LANSING, MI – Sparrow Health System has been selected as a 2020 Michigan Works! Impact Award winner, honoring the finest achievements in workforce development statewide.

Sparrow was nominated by Capital Area Michigan Works! For being a leader in the Mid-Michigan region in the development of apprenticeship programs.Sparrow received its honor today at the annual Impact Awards in Lansing. The Awards offer a unique look at the work that’s transforming Michigan’s economy. The ceremony featured lawmakers presenting tributes to award winners, employers, workers, Michigan Works! Agencies and partners, who all shared their stories and the role Michigan Works! Played in their success.

“It is an honor to receive this award, which would not have been possible without the hard work of many people at Sparrow and our partners in the community, Capital Area Michigan Works! And Lansing Community College,” said Sherry Pfaff-Doody, Talent Acquisition Director, Sparrow Health System.

Among Sparrow’s highly successful apprenticeship programs is a collaboration with Lansing Community College to train Medical Assistants. The program addresses a major need in healthcare. It began in 2018 and grew to 16 students last year and continues this year with another 17. The best part: the students have already been placed in Medical Assistant jobs at Sparrow.

Sparrow worked with LCC on addressing the need for Medical Assistants by creating a program for current Caregivers in which the college would provide classroom time while students would get clinical experience at Sparrow. The Caregivers continue to get paid by Sparrow while in the program.

Sparrow has also worked closely with Capital Area Michigan Works!, with representatives serving on the agency’s Workplace Development Board. Sparrow also was a founding member of the healthcare-focused Regional Skills Alliance for the Capital area and the Capital Area IT Council.
