LANSING, MI – The Obstetric Anesthesia team at Sparrow Hospital has joined only 40 distinguished institutions nationwide – including Johns Hopkins, Stanford, and Tufts -- in receiving the Center of Excellence designation from the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP).
The award is a reflection of evidence-based Patient care and meeting the highest quality Patient safety standards.

“It is an honor to be recognized for pursuing excellence. Achieving this award is a reflection of the culture of collaboration we have developed on our Labor and Delivery Unit,” said Angel Martino-Horrall, M.D., Medical Director for Sparrow’s Obstetric Anesthesia Department.
“All of this is possible because of the exemplary team of leadership represented by our Obstetricians, Nurses, Residents, Nurse Anesthetists, Pharmacists, Anesthesiologists, and Administration that continuously strive for the absolute BEST in patient care for our obstetric Patients here at Sparrow.”
SOAP is a national body comprised of anesthesiologists, obstetricians, pediatricians, and scientists who share an interest in the care of the pregnant patient and the newborn.
In order to qualify for a Center of Excellence designation, the SOAP committee completed a thorough assessment of staffing, including leadership commitment to practice development, multidisciplinary collaborations, implementation of protocols complying with national guidelines, as well as up-to-date technology, equipment, and a process for continuous quality improvement.
