The month’s importance to Sparrow will be obvious as the lights become pink throughout October on top of the Sparrow Hospital Tower and outside of the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center.

  • Then, on Monday, Oct. 8, it’s the 29th Annual WINS Breast Cancer Celebration, an uplifting night of celebration for breast cancer survivors and their loved ones. Sponsored by the WINS breast cancer support group and the Sparrow Herbert-Herman Cancer Center, the evening will feature speaker Becky Olson, a three-time breast cancer survivor, who recounts her inspiring story with grace and humor. Refreshments begin at 6:30 p.m., with the program from 7-9 p.m. It will be held at the Sparrow Michigan Athletic Club, 2900 Hannah Boulevard, East Lansing. For questions, contact Sparrow Breast Health Navigator Sharon Cosgrove at 517.364.5471.
  • On Oct. 18, Sparrow will hold, “Fighting Cancer? Nutrition Tools & Tips,” in which experts will do a hands-on cooking demonstration at the Gathering Place at Sparrow. Attendees can learn nutrition tips and tools to assist in the fight against cancer, learning recipes to prepare healthy meals and snacks. Participants will be able to sample dishes and take home snacks. The class is from 6-7:30 p.m. Registration and parking are free.  To register, call 1.800.Sparrow or visit Sparrow.org/Events.
  • Sparrow is sponsoring a number of Breast Cancer Awareness Games at Michigan State University during October. A cancer survivor will be highlighted at each game and fans will get educational information. The games are women’s soccer vs. Penn State at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5; volleyball against Indiana at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5; field hockey vs. the University of Michigan at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12; and men’s soccer against Northwestern at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19.
  • The Sparrow Michigan Athletic Club will Go Pink in October with all enrollment fees donated to the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center. The MAC will also feature a special $50 enrollment fee. A portion of the proceeds from an Oct. 9 sterling silver jewelry sale in the lobby of the MAC will also go to the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center. The sale, sponsored by the Sparrow St. Lawrence Gift Shop, will also be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 10-11 on the third floor foyer of Sparrow Hospital.
  • In addition, Sparrow Carson Hospital’s Radiology Department will give away a variety of items to women who get a mammogram in October, and the hospital will participate in local Pink Out activities. Pink lights will dot the hospital and its Healing Garden.
  • Sparrow Clinton Hospital in St. Johns will feature pink lights in its courtyard Healing Garden and messages of hope will be seen on the hospital walls.
  • Each woman who gets a mammogram at Sparrow Ionia Hospital during October will receive a manicure set. Sparrow Ionia will also participate – with lots of giveaways and information – in the Oct. 10 Ladies Night Out in downtown Ionia and the hospital’s Healing Garden will also be festooned with pink lights.
