CARSON CITY, MI – For the first time, Sparrow Carson Hospital has been designated as a Level IV Trauma facility, reflecting its expertise in providing advanced trauma life support prior to transferring Patients to a higher-level trauma center.

The designation from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reflects years of work by Sparrow Carson to provide the next level of quality care to Patients.“We are proud to achieve this designation and deliver this level of trauma care. It speaks to our commitment to our Patients and the rural communities we serve” said Sara Hagerman, Emergency Department Nurse Manager.

With trauma being the leading cause of death in the United States for individuals up to age 45, this designation validates that Sparrow Carson is skilled to provide the advanced levels of care needed, including stabilization of seriously injured Patients who need to be transferred to a large trauma center.

Over the course of two years, Sparrow Carson Emergency Physicians completed Advanced Trauma Life Support Certification, the entire team participated in extensive education to improved team collaboration, and new evidence-based best practices were initiated, specific to trauma

Designation requirements go beyond Patient care in the Emergency Department. Hospitals must complete a rigorous application. Elements reviewed include relationships with local EMS, disaster protocols, access to surgical care, transfer agreements for Patients needing more comprehensive care, involvement in prevention and outreach programs in the community, and an onsite visit from surveyors.

“All these elements combined led to the formal development of Sparrow Carson Hospital’s Trauma Program and aided in advances in Patient care,” said Hagerman.

Sparrow Carson also continues to rank in the 90th percentile among like-sized hospitals nationally for Patient satisfaction.
