IMG_6547EAST LANSING, Mich. — Douglas J announced the opening of its School of Barbering, the first barbering program to come to greater Lansing that will be accredited. Located in the downtown East Lansing Marriott, the school will welcome its inaugural class of students this month.

“Our School of Barbering is a highly anticipated addition to our education offerings, which is why we’re so proud to see it come to fruition,” said Scott Weaver, president of Douglas J Aveda Institutes & Salons. “Our first class of students is already full, proving there’s a real demand for this career path.”

The School of Barbering will provide a yearlong, 1,800-hour curriculum in skills including precision cutting and shaving, color and chemical treatments, skincare and business management. The program will feature hands-on curriculum, similar to Douglas J’s Aveda Institute where students provide services to clients while they learn.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the barber, hairstylist and cosmetology industry is expected to grow 8% by 2028. After earning a barber’s license, students have multiple career tracks to choose from including becoming a barber, men’s stylist or platform artist.

“Through the School of Barbering, we’re able to bring a new standard for professionalism and innovation to our students, and we get to start it right here in our hometown,” Weaver said. “As with all of our programs, barbering students will be instructed by licensed educators who are highly experienced and love what they do, bringing a level of unprecedented technical expertise paired with personal passion.”

The program includes education around Aveda men’s grooming cycle, which focuses on professionalism, precision and speed. The second class of students will begin June 9. The School of Barbering will begin accepting clients the same day "Urban barber shops are experiencing a modern revival, creating a demand for barbers in the state of Michigan,” said T.J. Weaver, vice president and co-owner of Douglas J Institutes & Salons. “This is a great opportunity for people who are passionate about hair care, grooming and skin care but don’t necessarily want to work in a salon or spa.”
