Okemos, Michigan — Elementary students from across Michigan will experience the wonders of the human mouth and learn about oral health at Delta Dental’s Chew on This! exhibit at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum.

The Delta Dental Foundation (DDF) committed $25,000 in field trip grants to pre-K to fourth grade classrooms, allowing about 5,000 students to visit the exhibit. This is the second round of field trip grants for the year and will total the DDF’s overall contribution to $45,000.

“Good oral health is closely linked to overall health and school and life success. That’s why teaching children at an early age about taking care of their teeth and mouths is so important,” said Teri Battaglieri, Director for the Delta Dental Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum in order to give thousands of children an outlet to learn about oral health in a fun and enriching setting.”

The Chew on This! exhibit allows students to clean giant teeth with larger-than-life dental instruments, make healthy food choices at the Smart Mart and view dental images to better understand the mechanics of the mouth.

Starting September 9, dental students from the University Of Michigan School Of Dentistry Pediatric Club will volunteer at the museum on Saturday mornings to facilitate hands-on activities related to oral hygiene and answer questions about Chew On This!

Chew on This! was created by Lansing’s Impression 5 Science Center. Since 2014, the Delta Dental Foundation has awarded 48 field trip grants, allowing thousands of students to visit the exhibit in Lansing. Chew On This! will be on loan to Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum through December 2017.
