Chris Holman talks with Edythe Hatter-Williams, CEO, Capital Area Michigan Works! about manufacturing opportunities for students. With students now back in school, it’s a great time to start a conversation with them about their futures. It is important to foster their curiosity and expand their knowledge of careers that they might not know about and encourage the students to explore unique career opportunities.
College tuition prices are rising at astounding rates, and more students are thinking about alternative options to the traditional four-year college. Skilled trades offer a lower cost option to a four-year degree, and result in an in-demand, lucrative career for graduates. High-skill, high-wage jobs in the skilled trades are abundant in not just Michigan but around the U.S. ,according to The Manufacturing Institute.
Over the next 10 years, 2 million of the 3.5 million U.S. manufacturing jobs are expected to go unfilled due to a lack of candidates with the necessary skills. The stigma often associated with skilled trades is on its way to being broken, but a vital component to fill these jobs is education.
