Lansing MLK, Jr., Commission 2018 MLK Art Exhibit, "Remembering Martin" March 4 - April 30

mlkl.pngDays ahead of an art exhibit in East Lansing planned by the Greater Lansing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commision, MBN's Jeffrey Mosher, spoke with the commision's chairperson Elaine Hardy. The MLK art exhibit is presented by the Greater Lansing Area Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission and commemorates the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination.

Artwork and artifacts represent Dr. King’s life from the 1957 founding of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, for which Dr. King was the first elected president, to his assassination April 4, 1968, and funeral April 9. • Included are three prints autographed by John Lewis, a U.S. representative for Georgia and a leader in the civil rights movement.

Sunday March 4th, Jeffrey then attended the exhibit opening at the Hannah Community Center in East Lansing. The exhibit also includes some historical information about the Greater Lansing Area Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission, the longest-existing MLK Day commission in the nation working to make all voices heard. The art exhibit is March 4-April 30 at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road, East Lansing, MI 48823. It is free and open to the public.
• Sunday, March 4, 1-6 p.m. – That opening reception with refreshments began at 1 p.m. with a short program at 1:30 p.m.; free and open to the public.
• Remaining schedule – M-F 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sundays noon to 6 p.m.

About the Commission: It is a non-profit, appointed-body comprised of volunteer representatives dedicated to preserving the legacy and teachings of Dr. King, supporting community agencies, and empowering youth to achieve educational goals.
• The Commission’s focus is on the area’s pressing needs of literacy, youth violence, hunger, mentoring, education and community enrichment.
• Accomplishments include:
o Awarded more than $60,000 in grants to community service agencies. o Awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships.
o Created the King Legacy and Service Award recognizing one person annually for selfless, exemplary service and dedication to Greater Lansing.
o Annually sponsor a delegation of high school students to attend the eight-day, Y-Achievers Cultural Immersion Transportation Study & Black College Tour.

• The Commission organizes the largest MLK Day holiday annual luncheon celebration in the country. It is attended by nearly 1,500 people and features a keynote speaker who has been instrumental in the civil rights movement.
