LANSING, Mich. — LAFCU is accepting applications for the 2019 Women Helping Educate Every Lady (W.H.E.E.L.) scholarship essay contest through Wednesday, July 31. The 2019 award of $3,000 pushes LAFCU’s six-year award total to $15,000.
(above) Like the 2018 winners of the LAFCU W.H.E.E.L. essay contest, pictured, this year’s recipients will use the scholarships for education needed to enter or re-enter the workforce or to advance in their careers. At the 2018 presentation are, from left, LAFCU’s Alyssa Sliger; winners Vagdevi Anyapu, Maryam Abbas and Jessica Miyamoto; Kelli Ellsworth Etchison, from LAFCU; and Steve Slocum, from LCC Foundation.
The contest is for women who are pursuing education needed to enter or re-enter the workforce or to advance in their careers. Each of three winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend Lansing Community College (LCC) 2019 fall semester.
Applications are available online at www.lafcu.com/resources/scholarships.
“The W.H.E.E.L. scholarship is ideal for women who need some classes to complete a degree or to become licensed or certified for a new occupation,” said Kelli Ellsworth Etchison, LAFCU chief marketing officer. “We focus on adult women because it is most often women who delay their education and careers due to family obligations. Their personal success is important for the economic success of the communities LAFCU serves.”
Winners will be determined by their one-page essay about their new career choice or advancement goal, inspiration for pursuing this new goal, and why they want to pursue it now.
Applicants must live, work or attend church or school in Michigan, which is LAFCU’s geographical service area. They do not need to be LAFCU members.
Entries may be uploaded via www.lafcu.com or mailed to LAFCU, 106 N. Marketplace Blvd., Lansing 48917, Attn: Marketing. For more information, visit www.lafcu.com, or call 517.622.6600 or 800.748.0228.
