Motivation and Inspiration, Stan KogutChris Holman welcomed Stan Kogut, from Keep Learning, and retired Superintendent at Ingham Intermediate School District. They are looking forward to the Keep Learning Week, being held on September 21-25, 2015.

They discussed what Keep Learning is:

  • Keep Learning is a coalition of education, business, government and media partners committed to doubling the number of people in our region with college degrees and/or skilled trade certifications.
  • Keep Learning has more than 30 partners committed to promoting education in greater Lansing, including media outlets, government agencies, private businesses and cultural institutions, local school districts, Lansing Community College, Michigan State University and Capital Area Michigan Works!.
  • Keep Learning strives to teach and influence children to understand the importance of the relationship between post-secondary education and/or skilled trade certifications and success.
  • Keep Learning works with regional stakeholders to nurture and market the pillars of our Mid-Michigan New Economy business, including biotechnology, information technology, insurance, finance and advanced manufacturing.

What is Keep Learning Week?

  • Keep Learning Week is an annual opportunity for our region to draw attention to critical topics related to education.
  • This year, Keep Learning Week is September 21 to 25, and the Keep Learning partners are raising awareness and community conversations about the importance of STEAM education.

Chris and Stan also review the "what" and "why" of STEAM:

  • STEAM education is curriculum and education exploration that focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
  • While STEM education is growing in popularity, STEAM education integrates the arts, creativity and problem solving as a core area of development.
  • Art education includes liberal arts, language arts, social studies, physical arts, fine arts and music that each shape development in STEM fields.
  • STEAM prepares our youth for 21st century challenges, by providing opportunities for students to ask questions, collaborate and innovate through core standards.
  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in professional, scientific and technical services is projected to grow by 29 percent, adding about 2.1 million new jobs between 2010 and 2020.

What are the intended results?

  • Keep Learning aims to provide a better quality of life in Mid-Michigan - education is the key to success, both personally and as a community.
  • Keep Learning values non-traditional approaches to learning, including early/middle colleges, apprenticeships, internships, job shadowing, mentoring and experimental learning.
