GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Douglas J is pleased to announce the expansion of salon and spa services in Grand Rapids following the acquisition of Phillip Michael Salon and grand opening of a new salon and spa, increasing the company’s presence in West Michigan.
“Since opening in Grand Rapids in 2007, the Douglas J Aveda Institute has continued to grow,” said Scott Weaver, president and co-owner of the Douglas J Aveda Institutes and Salons. “With strong relationships already established in West Michigan, we felt it was a good time to expand upon our brand, knowing we can now offer our students a career path to continue with Douglas J as a salon professional in this part of the state.”

The former Phillip Michael Salon has been owned by industry veteran Phillip Kissinger for more than a decade. Kissinger has more than 20 years of experience in the industry. He will continue to work behind the chair daily as operations transition to Douglas J, as will stylists and Douglas J alumni Erica Straayer, Markie Hudson and Jose Cardosa. The salon is located at 5751 Byron Center Ave. SW, Suite E in Wyoming. Reservations can be made by calling (616) 532-9500.

The newly-opened salon and spa facility at 1100 East Paris Ave SE in Grand Rapids is gearing up to be Douglas J’s medical spa facility. As guests are looking for alternative ways to make their skin healthier, Douglas J is thrilled to strengthen its presence in the growing med spa industry.

Douglas J is committed to West Michigan, evident through its investment in local talent and businesses. Several Institute graduates have opened salons in the area, which is a testament to the community being welcoming of high-quality small businesses. The salons anticipate creating additional jobs as guest demand increases as a result of exceptional service.

“This is a perfect alignment of our collective culture and values,” Kissinger said. “I truly love interacting with guests in a positive salon environment. Making them look and feel their best will always be a passion of mine.” To head up these exciting changes, Shanna Marquardt will oversee all three Grand Rapids area locations and work with the local team to build upon the current business as the regional director of West Michigan. Marquardt has vast experience as director of the Grand Rapids Institute, and looks forward to her new role in fortifying the institute and salon partnership.

“I look forward to the continuing opportunity to introduce and train students in this industry, provide career opportunities, network with other businesses both within and outside the beauty industry and expand Douglas J’s business,” Marquardt said.
