March 13, 2017 10:00 AM

brad brown.jpgBrad Brown is a career firefighter with over 21 years of experience, serving the last 8 in the Planning Division for the City of Grand Rapids Fire Department. Having a lifelong passion for learning, Brad has recently completed a four year executive fire officer program at the national fire academy and holds a Master’s degree in Executive Fire Leadership. He has presented numerous times over the past several years for the Michigan Lean Consortium, University of Michigan Industrial Engineering Program, American Society for Quality and the Center for Public Safety Excellence. When not learning or working, Brad spends time on the family farm with his Wife, two young children and way too many animals.

In these three segments – hear Captain Brown of the Grand Rapids Fire Dept discuss how the culture has changed to allow firemen and administrators to open their minds to structured management – very hot.

The Leaning Edge, hosted by Debra Levantrosser, she speaks with leaders, implementers and believers in the lean philosophy to share their successes and struggles in hopes that they will help others in their lean journey.

The show focuses on the fact that lean is a mindset and a culture, not a set of process improvement tools, and shows how this approach can make your city, state and country an even stronger and more successful, stable place one organization at a time and one person at a time.

The “Lean” philosophy refers to engaging and involving all levels of employees in development of ideas to provide value to customers by aiming for high quality, low cost and short lead time. A specific kind of leadership style is seen in successful lean organizations which includes rewarding experimentation and developing people into problem solvers.
