Southfield, MI – September 10, 2019  Better Business Bureau® Serving Detroit & Eastern Michigan is once again partnering with Shred-It to host ‘Secure Your ID’ Day on Saturday, September 21, 2019. The event will be hosted at Southfield High School; open from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All cars must be in line by 12:30. There will be electronic recycling at this event.

Shred-It will shred up to three grocery-sized bags of sensitive paper documents at no charge. There will be a $10 per bag charge for any additional bags, with proceeds supporting the BBB Educational Foundation.

According to the Federal Trade Commission’s 2018 Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book, Michigan ranked No. 10 in the nation for the number of fraud complaints and No. 8 in reports of identity theft. Identity theft can be committed in many ways such as Government Documents or Benefits Fraud, which tied for top of the list with credit card fraud and other identity theft at 23 percent of the reports. It can also be perpetrated through phone or utilities fraud (17%), employment or tax-related fraud (15%), according to the FTC.

BBB-1

“Over half of identity theft victims can trace the theft back to something that was once in their possession,” said Melanie Duquesnel, President and CEO of BBB® Serving Eastern Michigan (Shown Left). “By properly disposing of documents containing your personal information, you are protecting yourself from future identity theft.”

Document shredding is one of the most effective ways to dispose of sensitive records, data, documents and information that could be the target of identity thieves. However, it is important to know how long to keep certain documents, so prior to attending the event or shredding at home, consumers should consult this records retention schedule for more information.
