There are often issues that we can consider as controversial or debatable. Each week Dr. David Mielke presents one of these issues to give you Something to Think About. The topic for Monday is "A Matter of Degrees." There has been a long running policy battle about whether community colleges in Michigan should be allowed to offer bachelors degrees. A two bill package was recently introduced in the legislature that would allow community colleges to offer 4 year degrees, but would then prohibit the community colleges from levying property taxes. A separate bill has been stalled for more than a year that would allow community colleges to offer a limited number of bachelor degree programs. Do we need more 4-year degree programs along with what is already being offered by Michigan's 15 universities? Will the potential competition for students lead to what some say is already over-capacity at the 15 universities at a time when college age students in Michigan are declining? Should the legislature pass bills to effectively stop community colleges from offering new bachelor programs

There are often issues that we can consider as controversial or debatable. Each week Dr. David Mielke presents one of these issues to give you Something to Think About. The topic for today is "Snapped!" US regulators are pushing stricter rules for stores that accept food stamps. By year's end, the Agriculture Department wants to adopt rules that require stores redeeming food stamps to stock a wider variety of meats and vegetables and sell fewer hot meals, like pizza. The aim is to increase access to healthy food for low income people. Do we need more regulations to influence eating habits? Will the regulations actually have that effect? Will the regulations hurt small retailers to the benefit of large retailers such as Walmart, Meijers and Kroger?

There are often issues that we can consider as controversial or debatable. Each week Dr. David Mielke presents one of these issues to give you Something to Think About. The topic for today is "Big News Day." Last Thursday (June 23rd) was a big news day--the Brits voted to leave the European Union, the Supreme Court announced 2 major decisions, one that blocks President Obama's executive order that would have given legal status to 4 million illegal immigrants and a second allowing affirmative action to be used in admission decisions at the University of Texas. What are the possible implications of these 3 stories for Michigan? Can we expect major economic impacts? Will there be ripple effects?
